Liane Holliday Willey describes her journey of self-discovery as a person with Asperger syndrome after her daughter's diagnosis. This is a useful book for adults with autism, especially women and those diagnosed late in life. Liane Holliday Willey herself had previously been diagnosed "gifted and spoiled".
Date: 9/24/15

Florica Stone is a therapist who works with autistic children and has a compassionate attitude and empathy that seems rare. Her approach, expressed through descriptions of useful interventions, always begins and operates through attempting to share the child's understanding. Many of the exercises involve joining the child, sharing the child's experience and doing what the child does. This can be such a revelation for parents when they discovery that apparently meaningless or apparently self-harmful behaviours feel meaningful when they try them for themselves. I believe more in hard work than in "unconditional love" (lack of progress does not equate with lack of love), but perhaps she is using different words to say the same thing.
Date: 9/24/15

NeuroTribes is an expressive, factually-rich history of the development of the diagnostic entity of autism and the development of the wider spectrum. Steve Silberman brings to life the forgotten or suppressed contributions of Hans Asperger and others who recognized an autistic spectrum long before their adoption within the DSM. Leo Kanner and others come out badly and Hans Asperger comes out the hero in this narrative. The book is a polemical work of advocacy for the neurodiversity movement, but tends to equate autism with giftedness and intelligence.
Date: 9/24/15

Oliver Sacks spent time observing and living alongside Stephen Wiltshire (Chapter 6, "Prodigies") and Temple Grandin (Chapter 7, "An anthropologist on Mars") to develop insightful dexcriptions of what it means to be autistic. This is not a clinical work, but an attempt by the clinician to bring the subjects' lives and words to a broad readership.
Date: 9/24/15

Henry Maudsley's "The Pathology of Mind" is one of the earliest detailed scientific descriptions of disorders of mental development. In Chapter 6, "The insanity of early life", Henry Maudsley describes a variety of clinical cases of children hospitalized due to mental disorder or developmental delay. His scientific account is one of the first to identify "insanity" within the developmental capacity to express disorder ("Suppose now that an infant becomes insane soon after birth, what sort of insanity must it exhibit! The range and variety of mental disorder possible are clearly limited by the extent of existence of mental faculty; which is almost nothing."). Jean Marc Gaspard Itard's account of his life with Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, is a credible account early of a child with autism. Victor passed through several homes after his capture in the woods in 1798, until adopted by Itard and his housekeeper, with whom Victor lived until his death. Itard attempted to educate Victor and wrote detailed accounts of his hearing, responses, empathy and behaviour. Jean Marc Gaspard Itard's account was published in English in 1805 as "An Historical Account of the Discovery and Education of a Savage Man: Or of the First Developments, Physical and Moral, of the Young Savage Caught in the Woods near Aveyron, in the year 1798" and is available online: http://books.google.ie/books/about/An_Historical_Account_of_the_Discovery_a.html
Date: 9/24/15

This is a psychiatric clinical textbook. Chapter 5, "Psychiatric Comorbidity: An Introduction", is especially useful for adolescents and adults who want to communicate effectively with mental health providers. Mental illness affects approximately one third of all adults at some point in the lifespan, and approximately two thirds of people with a diagnosis of autism. Many will be diagnosed first with a mental illness and subsequently with an autism spectrum disorder as a consequence of interaction with mental health services. Distinguishing between mental illness issues and autism can be hard, but is essential - the consequences of misidentification can lead to pointless (and potentially harmful) attempts to treat behaviours that are core autistic features and that do not respond to medication.
Date: 9/24/15
