A researcher looking for a genetic cure for autism is caught in a plot that may destroy or save the human species in this science fiction thriller. The autistic children - adopted from poor families for medical experimentation - are research subjects who do not even rate a name. The author does invoke a number of themes about autism and evolution, but overall the plot detaches the gene from the individuals in which it resides.
