I loved the characterisations and the attraction of opposites in this gritty, realistic romance. Flynn Hendrick, the 22-year-old 'Freaky Flynn', has Asperger syndrome. The bullying that he endures throughout school and into adulthood is portrayed with such realism. His tormenter and unlikely lover Ellie McCallum is equally real. The mixture of attraction and repulsion is handled well, especially the tactile sensitivities, rigid routine and difficulties in social imagination that I have. The give-and-take of learning to be sexual with another person is portrayed especially well, describing the impact of autism traits in sexually explicit scenes.
