Itard, Jean Marc Gaspard (1805) An Historical Account of the Discovery and Education of a Savage Man
Itard, Jean Marc Gaspard (1805) "An Historical Account of the Discovery and Education of a Savage Man". London: Richard Phillips.
Jean Marc Gaspard Itard's account of his life with Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, is a credible account early of a child with autism. Victor passed through several homes after his capture in the woods in 1798, until adopted by Itard and his housekeeper, with whom Victor lived until his death. Itard attempted to educate Victor and wrote detailed accounts of his hearing, responses, empathy and behaviour. Jean Marc Gaspard Itard's account was published in English in 1805 as "An Historical Account of the Discovery and Education of a Savage Man: Or of the First Developments, Physical and Moral, of the Young Savage Caught in the Woods near Aveyron, in the year 1798" and is available online: http://books.google.ie/books/about/An_Historical_Account_of_the_Discovery_a.html
